Some business models will obviously have to adjust or be left in the dust through this innovation, i.e.the record industry. but it will not fail to the point of extinction, why? because humans and the world in general NEED MUSIC!. see "Life without music" at: http://www.thesilverconductor.... and you'll understand why.
Who am I? I actually called their number to find out who the artist was - I NEVER do that. I heard him again on Sirius XMU and downloaded him. Pretty nice artist that I look forward to hearing again. I always believed that it doesn't take money to make money, but money doesn't just grow on trees either. I went to school for German and engineering, but have since fallen in love with making sweet sweet music and photography. I'm constantly on the lookout for opportunities to turn either into an escape from my 9-5, but I'm apprehensive as to what that would do to the love I have for it.

Of course, everyone warns me that I'd be ruining what I love to do by introducing money into the equation, but who's to say I won't be happy with the end result? I generally enjoy my current situation - I have a job that allows me to provide for myself while feeding my obsessions with music production and photography. The only thing I'm worrried about is how I'm spending my time overall. When does my passion start suffering as a result of my time spent at work?

When should I stop with the safe/secure thing and dive into the unknown? Will it ever happen? One of the previous commenters said that once people start asking how much you charge, you'll know. I think I'll hold onto that as my indicator.

Re: When A Hobby Becomes A Job

My first memory on this was pretty young. Definitely hurts when you realize that you have neither the physical prowess nor the desire to go to school for a million years, all to take one lousy trip into space. Astronauts were the closest thing to royalty in US society that I ever knew, and knowing that wasn't really something that would be on my radar was a hurtful sentiment.

Looking back, I don't think I had a whole lot of direction. It's easy to say "I want to be an inventor," but lacking the capital not a whole lot can come of it. Still, I've dedicated a whole lot to my current line of work, and it's definitely freeing to know that it was something I'd sort of dreamed of as a boy, even if I didn't know exactly where I'd end up.

Re: When A Hobby Becomes A Job

What's up Kev? Well written piece. I understand your feelings regarding your passion and career. I have a passion for the music (promotions & radio) and I'm trying to get it exposed out here where I live in Tampa. It's slow and difficult to get the vibe out, since the scene is very commercial. I stay up countless night working on podcasts and trying to figure out ways to reach a larger audience. It's all to much at times, but I know if I just give up nothing will come of it. Just gotta stay focused.

Re: When A Hobby Becomes A Job

Yeah It's cool todo something you enjoy because it makes you happy and money isn't the motivation. I'm blessed to have gone to some great schools and I eventually started doing freelance graphic design because I enjoyed learning. It keeps a few bucks in my pocket and it's a great way to meet new people. If I could provide any advice that would be to share your talents with your family first for free because they'll never say your stuff looks wack. Then keep on practicing and once someone ask how much you charge, you know that you've officially made it.

Re: When A Hobby Becomes A Job

not sure why I wrote LOL at the end of my post....ignore that

Re: When A Hobby Becomes A Job

Ok, I'll keep it short. I went to 3 diff colleges (yes, 3) to study Computer Science but continually kept missing class because I'd be in my dorm room making beats. Finally realized, I HATE programming computers....dropped out and decided to move to LA and chase my dreams.

It was a good move all in all but realized some hard/cold lessons of the industry which lead me to moving to London and going back to school but for music (the business side of it) so I can properly setup my own company and have control of my destiny.

Am I happy with my decision? Hell yea....

Am I broke? Hell yea....

But its an addiction, I can't see myself working in any other industry. Even though its one of the toughest industries (if not THE toughest), my drive for it has not faltered in the last 10+ yrs.

LOL

Re: Small Business Jobs Act for Musicians

Thanks for sharing.
